Catherine Ford was raised in Bloomsbury by her mother and grandmother. In her childhood, Ford suffered anxiety due to an obsessional disorder. Ford started acting in her teens and became an actor in the National Youth Theatre. She was admitted to Sylvia Young Theatre School but after one week decided she wasn't a good fit. Ford later applied for a place for the Central School of Speech and Drama and received an acceptance on her fourth attempt. Shaun Dingwall - who later played Pete Tyler in Doctor Who was also one of her classmates. Ford received her degree in 1993. However, prior to that, Ford made a television debut as a character in Surgical Spirit in an episode in 1991. Ford took the professional name Catherine Tate. Tate was seen in television programmes such as The Bill, Men Behaving Badly and London's Burning in the Nineties. Also, she was a regular performer at the theater, ultimately becoming a member of with the Royal Shakespeare Company for its 2000-2001 season. Tate gained recognition as a stand-up comedian, which was added to her portfolio in 1996.
